Andy Murphy
Biography
Andy Murphy has more than 25 years of experience in cable & broadcast television, managing operations, engineering, production and startup projects. He has held top level posts at The Golf Channel, USA Broadcasting, Fox Net, Fox Latin America and Media Management Corporation.
Before forming Media LightBridge with partner Fritz Mills, Mr. Murphy served as Vice President of Broadcast Operations and Engineering for The Golf Channel. His responsibilities included management of the studios, post production, engineering, master control, traffic, library services and international operations. While at Golf he directed the company’s move to an enterprise file based workflow and content management systems, developed the criteria and oversaw the team that developed and automated proprietary on-air branding and scoring systems, moved Golf from an analog transmission platform to digital and finally to high definition. During his tenure at the Golf Channel Mr. Murphy directed the launches of Golf UK, Comcast Sports Southeast, Golf HD and managed the technical aspects of transitioning the PGA Tour events to the Golf Channel for Thursday/Friday broadcasts and full round coverage of early and late season events in 2007.
Prior to the Golf Channel, Mr. Murphy followed a group of Fox veterans and Barry Diller to Silver King Broadcasting (USA Broadcasting) as VP of Broadcast Operations and Engineering. Here he oversaw the operation of 12 major market stations, the company’s LPTV network and two teleports. While at USA Broadcasting he was responsible for planning USA’s HDTV transition, and worked on committees with NY and Chicago broadcasters responsible for developing market–wide HDTV transmission and tower plans. Additionally, he was responsible for a complete rebuild of WAMI-TV, Miami, from the transmitter to facilities and studios located in South Beach, as well as overseeing the launch and operations for Diller’s “local content experiment” in Miami.
In 1990 Mr. Murphy joined Fox Broadcasting in Los Angeles as Director of Operations to build Fox Broadcasting’s “White Area Service”, known as Fox Net. He was promoted to Vice President of Operations in 1993 and expanded responsibilities to the launch and operation of Fox Latin America and Cine Canal. Later that year he was named VP/General Manager of Fox Net, assuming responsibilities for all aspects of the channel. As the GM he restructured the channel, making it competitive and profitable within six months. Additionally, while at Fox he was tasked with developing the operational plan to distribute World League of American Football to North America, Latin America, and Mexico, as well as developing the NFL blackout strategy within Fox’s White Area Service.
Early in his career, he participated in the design, construction, and start–up of five television stations, two of which (WSTG, Providence and WMSN, Madison) he remained at and continued to oversee operations as Chief Engineer. At a third (WFYZ, Nashville) he co-produced two successful music–based television shows in the Nashville market, highlighting top acts that included the Stray Cats, Carl Perkins, Kiss, and Blue Oyster Cult.
Mr. Murphy has also worked as a Project Engineer for Midwest Communications Systems Integration Group (acquired by Harris Broadcast), where he designed and oversaw the construction of remote production systems for South Africa Broadcast Corporation, the Ministry of Kuwait, NBC and the USAF.
During his career, Mr. Murphy has sat on the advisory boards or participated in advisory events for Harris Corporation, Scientific Atlanta, IntelSat, Avid and Sony.
